So I have been studying a lot. I'm trying my best to wake up, reach an enlightenment, as to which I no longer have to rely on others. There are many who point at the moon, And in being blind it is hard to tell how on the mark they are. But I "KNOW" it is there. So on with the topic at hand.
I've read William Walker Atkinson's Raja Yoga, as well as The Kybalion. I'm working on the "light on the path" by Mabel Collens
as well as some Very basic stuff on astrology and palmistry, and the Kabbalah. My father is also an occultist, and has been studying since he was 18. He has some articles here:
www.censorthis.com/ouran/ghosthome.html
as well as his friends stuff here:
www.orunla.org/pnohteftu/
This so far is my background. Now since this is a hermetic tribe as in based off the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus, are there any books that any of you can recommend? Any particular translation of the Pymander? Ect.
Also, Most of you are probably into other stuff as well, any books or techs/rituals that you can also suggest to "wake up" or "be aware"?
Also, because of my background, I have developed a viewpoint different than most people. I would be fun to talk debate whatever. Because I find that through argument, I get a better understanding of the basic materials.

Re: Thoughts, book recomendations, techs...anything?
Wed, October 3, 2007 - 9:32 AMBooks by Stephen Flowers
I have two of his that I really enjoy and one of them is purposefully hermetic oriented.
I forget the exact title (its in storage at the moment) but its something like Hermetic Theory and Practice or the Postmodern Magical Papyri of Abaris"
It synthesizes alot of things in a very concise and clear way. -

Wed, October 3, 2007 - 10:10 AMI am a big fan of Manly Palmer Hall. His Secret Teachings tome really concisely lays out the basics of hermeticism and western occultism. -

Wed, October 3, 2007 - 8:21 PMFor Kabbalah, I highly recommend The Mystical Kabbalah by Dion Fortune.
The Kybalion is one of my favorites. I read it over and over again and always get something new out of it. So simple, yet so powerful.

Re: Thoughts, book recomendations, techs...anything?
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 10:16 AMHermeticism is, essentially, a popularized form of Theurgy - which, in turn, is a branch of Platonic philosophy. Both Hermeticism and Theurgy can be considered to be either:
(a) highly philosophical schools of magic
(b) highly magical schools of philosophy
Ioan Couliano's book "Eros and Magic in the Renaissance" does a pretty good job of showing the strong connection between Hermeticism and classical Greek philosophy - in particular the link between the Magic of Marsilio Ficino (who first introduced the Corpus Hermetica to those who are Greekless), and Plato's "Symposium".
The Symposium provides the theoretical (and theological) justification for the foundational formula of Hermeticism: "As Above, So Below".
If you want an authoritative but accessible introduction to Plato you can do no better than "What Is Ancient Philosophy" by Pierre Hadot.
Other good books on Ficino and Renaissance Philosophy/Magia (other than Couliano's) in general are:
Brian Copenhaver's "Renaissance Philosophy" (Copenhaver is also the author/editor/translator of the most commonly used English edition of the Corpus).
Frances Yates' "Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition"
D.P. Walker's "Spiritual and Demonic Magic"
For Plato's Symposium you really should get R.E. Allen's translation, which also has an extensive commentary. Also, Ficino's "Commentary on Plato's Symposium on Love" is available in English translation and is really a gold mine! -

Of all the Advaita-lite "I'm not a guru" gurus out there she seems to be one of the better ones. But I prefer my Hinduism straight-up.

Thu, June 26, 2008 - 12:47 AMThe books of Eliphas Levi translated by A.E. Waite as well as the writings of C. G. Jung. Both are vast, wide in the spectrum of information and study. Good luck and Blessed Be my brother.
