I would be interested in discussing Orphism. I believe it is generally taken to be a Hellenistic mystery school involving a worship of Orpheus and a ritual descent to the underworld. It may go back further to ancient Egypt, but I think it did center on communication with the dead. How does this relate to the "Orphic Egg" that wonderful image of the egg with the snake wrapped around it. I did an article on Orphism in art (ala Apollonaire) but couldn't find that he referenced the ancient Orphics much. Wonder if the art of Delaunay and Leger did harken back to the ancient Orphics or if Apollinaire was just using the term as a sort of catchy publicity move.

Re: Orphism
Thu, December 1, 2005 - 12:00 PMHi,
inthe scattered references I have come across, much is often written and then given a 'famous' name to justify or lend credulity to it's concepts. Not unlike how the name 'Hermes Trimegustis' was applied to various writings, to give them an air of authenticity.
My baptised name in the Ecclesiastic Gnostic Church is Frater Orpheus. I was taken to this name as being a songsmith/poet/story teller I wished to pay homage to a power in this art art form.
I wonder , have you read the 'Hymns of Orpheus' it will tell you little about Orpheus, but much about Greek Religion of the Athenic/ Hellenistic cultures.
In my studies I have never seen any reproduction of the Orphic egg prior to those created by German metaphysicians of Mideval Europe. But if you wanted to get into this, I believe Joesph Campbell touches a bit on Orpheus, in his varied writings. For my money Campbell has a good handle on how this information can be used effectively.
I think the Orphic egg is one which borrows the name and vitality of the legend of Orpheus and his adventures, and that of the Serpent which was an enigma in it's own as a symbol Life/death....and then uses these to portray an Alchemical operation.....which is where most of Hermetic thought led to by the age of Scientific determinism.
my 2 cents

thus far I am associating orpheus with just about every underworld voyage mythology which is quite extensive really...

from a text at the above link (even though orpheus is missing from the list)
Lambda’s lifestyles and other chemical reactions mirror religious themes such as the dying/rising god, the cross, the brother rivalry over the throne, virgin birth and the great flood. Osiris was the first dying/rising god or biological sign representing the dying/rising Lambda. History, unaware of the sign’s meaning, then dribbled the idea of Osiris down through Time as other dying/rising gods such as Dumuzi (Sumer), Mithra (Persia), Attis (Phrygia), Adonis (Greece) and finally Jesus Christ. As the French poet and dramatist Antonin Artaud said, “laugh if you like, what has been called microbes is god.”
