What are your reasons for studying the occult?
I want to know because I have come to a point that, whenever I mention what I'm learning or ask any questions, I'm left talking to deaf ears. I have information about this fact from my mentor. But I want to test this information. I'm posting this question here and in the O.T.O. tribe.

Re: I have a question.
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 9:26 AMOriginally it started out because I was having a teenage crisis. Then it just became an addiction, so to speak. I just can't put books and stuff down. Then I started meditating and having an altar and engaging in the work and making stuff and I just like it.
Who are these deaf ears? -

Re: I have a question.
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 2:41 AMI became interested in the "occult" at a very young age. I was totally fascinated with the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome in particular. Emersing myself in these exotic worlds drew me toward exploring their mystic traditions. As I grew up, my knowlege and interest grew with me. So I guess it started as a love of ancient history and matured into an actual desire to gain the mystical secrets of those cultures I mentioned. Of course, modern mystical traditions became very much interwoven with my exploration. In many ways it was modern, western "occultists" such as Crowley, Blavatsky, Fortune, Spare, Regardie, and even Lavey (not to mention many others) who were able to give the exploration such flair that I became enflamed. What was an academic interest as a young man has become a philosophy to understand the Cosmos more personaly for an aging adult.

Sat, August 11, 2007 - 1:54 PM"the occult" is the most interesting thing that I've found to study, so far ~ in many ways it seems like "the occult" & "research" just go so well, hand in hand ~ I could spend the rest of my life studying/researching & die a happy person

Re: I have a question.
Sun, August 12, 2007 - 10:26 AMI distance myself from the term "occult". This became a matter of interest when I was discussing a poem I wrote (Hermetic Rap) with Don Weiser of Weiser books. "Occult" is really a misnomer a, a false division of study in and of itself. I also point out that in certain definitions "Occult" can mean "anything you dont know."
I prefer Ontology (study of Self includes psychology), and various other fields which are subsumed under the term "occult". Having said this.....
I started wanting to know more about myself and the world....then found that to know others and to help them is the path :)

Re: I have a question.
Sun, August 12, 2007 - 10:39 AMPS- one of my current theories that focuses on a universal need people have and is seen by the New age movement and other energy waves.....is due to a call from their own inner psche/spirit/soul that has realized the disconnection our species has with it's own nature. One of the ways to discover this is by delving into occult studies (Reiki, Crystals, Magick, etc)
my two cents

Yeah, but now you are just spitting hairs. I used the term occult because it is widely accepted and understood. If I was to use Ontology, Someone may take it to mean something more specific. To communicate one must be able to duplicate (make their own) what the other is saying. Words are just prescribed meanings to help us understand each other. -

It seems you are a bit defensive about someone else having a different definition than you. I accept that you are using the vulgar/common usage of a word like "occult", but this does not mean I have to dumb myself down to communicate with you :)
Words are far more than the perhaps oversimplification you ascribe to them.
For instance, you think I am "splitting hairs" which can be seen by someone as you claiming another person is being overly particular. But as we develope ourselves we come to find that by asking 'general' questions (like using a term "occult") you will only get general responses based upon a individuals personal definition. To prove this I simply point out the nice and meaningful, but personal answers given by those who responded.
You also state "To communicate one must be able to duplicate (make their own) what the other is saying. " See....this MAY be true for you, it MAY be true for another, but that does not make it 'ultimately true' or universal. i.e. a personal Kabballah vs. Universal Kabballah
The first is simply individual mental masturbation...the second attempts at true communication by finding common definitions between parties who are beginning to comunicate. In layman's terms........true communication begins when we SHARE definitions. In order to do this we must hammer out petty differences and agree on a base definition. Otherwise someone is only pretending to communicate and are not really interested in another's perspective :)
"Splitting hairs" you bet my friend! Because in this life you need to discover truth.....and that falls somewhere between what you and I might think it is :)

What did I say that sounded defensive?
<<but this does not mean I have to dumb myself down to communicate with you>>
But this sounds like an overt attack.
<<For instance, you think I am "splitting hairs" which can be seen by someone as you claiming another person is being overly particular.
But as we develope ourselves we come to find that by asking 'general' questions (like using a term "occult") you will only get general responses based upon a individuals personal definition.>>
I was asking exactly what I wanted to know, nothing less.
<<You also state "To communicate one must be able to duplicate (make their own) what the other is saying. " See....this MAY be true for you, it MAY be true for another, but that does not make it 'ultimately true' or universal. i.e. a personal Kabballah vs. Universal Kabballah>>
Then you tell me, How does one gain understanding? Think about it long and hard.
<<true communication by finding common definitions between parties who are beginning to comunicate. In layman's terms........true communication begins when we SHARE definitions. In order to do this we must hammer out petty differences and agree on a base definition. >>
I don't disagree. And as far as I know, Occultism is the "base definition" for what I was asking. There is still duplication that takes place in ones mind. Maybe I wasn't being clear. Duplication which (to me) means to take an object and recreate it making it your own. As compared to copying which means(to me) to thoughtlessly take a object without disecting it meaning. The difference between knowing and understanding.
<<Otherwise someone is only pretending to communicate and are not really interested in another's perspective :) >>
Kinda like forcing definitions on people, right?
<<i.e. a personal Kabballah vs. Universal Kabballah. The first is simply individual mental masturbation.>>
I have not studied the Kabballah or the Qubballah(different schools of thought), I'm currently working on other things right now. So I don't know enough about the subject to say anything on the matter. But as far as mental masturbation goes, How does one gain understanding without working through it? What's wrong with a little masturbation, eh?
<<"Splitting hairs" you bet my friend! Because in this life you need to discover truth>>
I'm very distrustful of the idea of truth. There are so many truths out there. I want to get to my own conclusion with out someone else telling me what is true and what is not.(I'm not saying that you are doing this)
<<.....and that falls somewhere between what you and I might think it is :) >>
That tends to be the case. But finding that ballance is hard.

Wed, August 22, 2007 - 1:38 PMEver since I was a teenager, I have had an inclination toward the mysteries. I had an inking of having been in an order in a previous life and though I didn't actively seek one out, it found me. I have had many direct experiences since them and am quite active in a hermetic order now.

Re: I have a question.
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 6:52 PMThere is so much out there. so many different groups, philosophies, and theories. Its sort of a hobby for me. I find so interesting. I can't get enough. Its addictive, and with tribe and rest of the internet, I can always get my daily fix. I tend to tie all of it together the best I can with my own beliefs. Now what I personally believe is a different story. -

Re: I have a question.
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 10:01 PMLet's see ... I have always lived mostly in my imagination with a wide-eyed curiosity about ideas and ontologies. When I was about 4 my dad took me to the planetarium and I started seriously looking at the sky. I would make wishes on stars and the Moon and dance myself dizzy and watch the sky spin. I always loved to read, and read a lot of mythology of various cultures as a child. Then I started gobbling down science fiction. In there, playing through library shelves, I found books about occult lore. I was drawn to other folks with these interests and to playing out scenarios in my mind about it all. and so on and so on and so into eternal on-ness
Peace,
