    wonderfull, John.
I will reply in my own words, and on the spot, to the best of my ability.
The great work is the perfecting of the self. Through the unfolding of the true will one acheives yoga, or union, with progressively subtler aspects of ones true nature. This ultimately leads to the attainment of union with the divine or most pure aspect of the self, God. the great work is the means of acheiving Godhood. It is, amung other things, the ballancing of all aspects of the self.
    perhaps more later.
    peace,
    Doshi

I'm bumping this up, because I would like to hear other definitions to this question. How about you john? What, in your own words, is "the great work"?

        In my words,

The Great Work is the return of the soul to its natural state while remaining bound to the life force and the physical vessel. In detail, it is the elevation of the life force and the physical vessel that allows progress in the Great Work, for the soul is already elevated to a degree and it is the life force and physical vessel which must “catch up”. But the Great Work is an infinite goal, for as the life force and physical vessel change, so too the soul changes or rather expands in what it is, and therefore the potential of the life force and physical vessel changes. In a general sense, being an empathic species, the gradual enlightenment of society is a desirable side effect of the Great Work.

    Hi John,

For me the great work is the day to day effort of intentionally and integrally yoking myself to what I understand to be my highest self, and then acting in the world as best I can. Out of this daily effort comes the desire to be a full participant in life, being present, trying to grow in awareness, healing and transforming my shortcomings and working for the good. There are many more esoteric ways to explain all of this, but for me it comes down to trying to be the best person I know how, while doing my best to share and serve others, and gradually working to better the world, bit by bit, step by step.

    All the best,

    Mark

First let me say that the phrase "the Great Work," like "Holy Guardian Angel," is a deliberately nebulous appeal to each individual's most inclusive aspirations.

Ultimately, the Great Work is the ongoing reduction of the tendency to recoil from certain experiences due to self-identification. On a more mundane personality-based level, it is the ongoing adjustment of perceptual and energy-management strategies toward greater inclusiveness and evolution.
