Eliphas Levi and Vampires

Anyone know of any connection between Eliphas Levi and Vampires (however you may want to use that term)?

I had a dream last night about a text written by him (in the dream anyway) titled "Contacting the Vampires". In the dream, the text was being referenced by a false guide/master in order to manipulate.

When I googled it, I mainly came up with this:

*Interesting* is an edgy new literary magazine with decided academic and mystical tendencies. It will come out as often as I feel like it, and its contents are limited to what I, the editor, personally find interesting. I'm looking for poetry, artwork, essays, interviews, book reviews... Anything is fair game but NOTHING BORING.

Here are some examples of things that interest me... The rising stars of contemporary American poetry. Controversies in the practice of anthropology. Exorcism techniques. The space where literary criticism meets psychoanalysis. Deconstructionism, and bad-mannered mockeries of deconstructionism. Practical Kabbalah. The causes of poverty. Theosophy. Shamanism. Being certain is stupid, whereas exercising doubt and critical thinking is more intelligent. Agnosticism is simply about being skeptical. Skeptical Atheists are welcome, and we ask that all people be considerate and polite when posting. Labels matter little, it's what's going on between the ears that counts.

True skeptics are skeptical of skeptics, skepticism, and him/herself.

Admitting that you may be wrong shows strength of character. We're only human. The only people who don't make mistakes aren't doing anything at all.

Agnostics may have suspicions about social/scientific/spiritual concepts having more or less validity, but our trick is discussing such topics without an emotional investment in any particular outcome.

So, with an open mind, a warm heart, and a colorful sense of humor, we extend our invitation to anyone inclined towards the Agnostic point of view.

This may be a much older debate, since the Tarot is a more modern adaptation, but the Tree and Hebrew itself are much older.

I understand the answers to these questions may be subjective. I am asking for your subjective opinion.

Magic 101: Paradigms

For magic to exist and work as a phenomenon, we must imagine a system where it can. Theoretically speaking, then, there can be number of systems where magic would feasibly exist. Some of these purport to be scientific, while others are clearly unscientific. Please note that my use of the term "unscientific" does not denote a judgement of the truth of the concept, it merely represents a statement of scientific fact. Because I love lists, I will present the magical paradigms I perceive in list format.

1. The Religious Paradigm. Magic is a power granted by divine beings. Practitioners of the religious paradigm typically consider their magic to be "miracles" and the magic of other religions to be "witchcraft". Particularly tolerant members of the religious paradigm, such as Wiccans, accept the magic of other religions to be true miracles and simply debate the source. The failure of religious magic to create scientifically replicable results is easily explained by the nature of the divine. In the anthropomorphic religions of the classical Greeks and Egyptians (but less so the Romans...), the gods were seen as fickle and arbitrary. In the modern religions of Abraham (Christianity, Judaism and Islam), "God" works in "mysterious ways". These concepts make the Religious Paradigm unfalsifiable and, therefore, unscientific.

2. The Secret Science Paradigm. Magic exists as a web of unseen connections and energies. The power of distant stars accurately fortells the future via astrology because those distant stars emit an energy that is hitherto unknown to science. The secret science paradigm is most often encountered by self-professed psychics who believe that their abilities are simply an unknown form of scientific learning. Practitioners of the sacred science paradigm point to alchemy before the discovery of the molecule and medicine before the discovery of the microbe as perfect examples of secret science. Alchemists and physicians of classical and medieval times worked with the knowledge they had to produce results. Psychics of today do the same thing until such a time as "psychic energy" is quantified.

3. The Universe as Illusion Paradigm. The universe is fundamentally made up of shared perceptions. Alter enough perceptions and you alter reality. What is reality other than a shared delusion? Magic is the practice of altering perceptions to reshape reality in favor of the magician. By causing others to share your delusion, you create or superimpose your own reality. Practitioners of the universe as illusion paradigm often focus on so-called "eastern" schools of mysticism, especially Vedic/Hindu mysticism, as an explanation. .

4. The Altered Self Paradigm. Magic has no external effect. The true purpose of magic is to harvest an inner effect. Magic allows practitioners to awaken with new freshness, see the world as it really is and face every day with a sense of being. Through the practice of magic, the altered self paradigm allows practitioners to grow more in touch with their own selves. By altering ourselves we can grow stronger mentally, physically and emotionally.

5. The Combination Paradigm. This paradigm simply combines two or more of the paradigms above. Religious magicians may also believe that the world is an illusion. Secret scientists may point to the placebo effect as an explanation of the altered self paradigm. There are 11 possible combinations: 1+2 (Divine Science), 1+3 (Religious Illusion), 1+4 (Ecstatic), 1+2+3 (Hermetic), 1+2+4 (Ascetic), 1+3+4 (Yogic), 2+3 ("Quantum"), 2+4 (Placebic), 2+3+4 (Self-Deific), 3+4 (Psychedlic) and 1+2+3+4 (Pan-Deific).

peace of mind ever changing

I am sitting here contemplating wisdom. Specifically what it is and how it can help me. Not the general wisdom which is particular to a given situation, but rather the idea of wisdom itself.

My definition is "information which may govern my actions to allow an efficient positive outcome in a situation." I can see how wisdom then relates to philosophy (a way of living). So for me wisdom is prudential, that is that it is useful on a moment to moment basis in helping me determine what is good.

I now realize that what "is good" may change depending upon circumstance. So then my wisdom must be flexible and not a static dogma.By it's very nature then, wisdom is not a concrete way of being or doing. A person wishing to use wisdom as a principle may well need to be very flexible and attentive to mindfulness. That is paying attention to the details of one's life and situations as they arise. Then we can apply our reason to contemplate the best way in which we may respond.

In the end result, is there any particular rule of thumb I can use to determine that I have tried my best ? How may I be assured that my actions are positive and constructive towards that which I am trying to achieve? When we go deep inside our natures and investigate our being we find many such ideas. Love, Security, Happiness, Well being. These are all based on feelings within which give us pleasure. Going even deeper we may find that there is an emptiness. A void which is quite indifferent and unknown to our consciousness. Like a vast space of our universe, we know little about it. It seems to defy our ability to understand for it is greater than our pleasure seeking egos. But if you are able to get yourself right to the edge of this vast 'un-consciousness' you will see how many such concepts of our reason like Justice, Security, Happiness, Laughter and Well being are temporal. That is they exist only for a short time before conditions change in phenomena. So they degree of their being real is in question. These concepts are transitory and can not be depended upon. because they are (like wisdom) created in a whim of circumstance, and just as likely to disappear when our circumstances change.

The last of these transitory concepts to disolve at the edge of the 'unknown' is Love. Now I have said this to people before and was asked, "Are you sure?" My reply then as now is that I invite you to discover it yourself! For me, I have found the criteria which allows me to make my judgement. But this does not mean that someone has to accept my proof. But you will find that at the moment you are losing your consciousness to this vast unknown universe (in sleep, in orgasm, in death) there is one aspect , one nature, one power. And though it is illusionary, it is the one which is best believed in....and that is Love.

Love is the wisdom by which I can best determine my intentions and actions. Loving myself, caring and loving others, learning to love that which I do not like. Learning to love situations which create fear or hostility. In this love is acceptance and patience. Acceptance in allowing people to be who they are, and patience to see how things will change.

But do not mistake Love for craving and clinging. Do not mistake Love for seeking to avoid that which is unpleasant (aversion). This you may see is a deeper level of acceptance. Allowing a loving situation to occur without any intention of trying to hold it. Allowing a negative situation to occur without instantly trying to change it. Through this I have the time and space to see how I can best help....how wisdom may best serve myself and others.

So Wisdom, like enlightenment is a part of everyone. Not something we have to find, but rather they are something we can learn to be and use. As far as myself? I have acted foolishly, I have acted wisely. May I learn the benefit of both and choose well.

Dealing with and Defeating Negativity by Roy Francis Stewart

In order to deal with Negativity, you need to understand how the universe works and how you work within this Universe. Negativity is the polarity of the Positive, in balance and what makes up this 3rd dimension. Without Negativity, you would have NO 3rd Dimension. It wouldn't exist and thus, you wouldn't exist in it.

The confusion is what and who we are really AND the fact that most of us don't know who and what we are and are thrust into this world and have no memory of any other experience, are ill equipped and are exposed only to the negativity we see. We think that this is all there is. Then we get all depressed, thinking that I have to escape or I spiral down and turn to over indulgence in drinking, drugs, whatever which of course, draws us down deeper into the negativity and thus some experience only these hell type worlds, then get comfortable with them, adjust to them and are perhaps live in them not unlike the living dead. Obviously anyone around you whether it be an individual or the news, or a war or countless other negative things drags you down to this side of the polarity.

BUT, the question is, what is the root of all this? And the answer is simply IGNORANCE. Ignorance of who we really are, what this universe is and how it operates.

So, the religions help point the way (but even they do not have all the answers). Mythologists pave the way, and filmmakers paint the way (But I’ll be the first to tell you, I don’t have all the answers either).

Now, I'm not a Buddhist per se, but they get pretty close to an understanding. However, the problem is, the individual still lives in this world and still may not know the ultimate truth. They may label the world as samsara, an illusion and seek refuge from it in meditation. Meditation is great, a great tool, but in order to escape the illusion world which is the 3rd dimension, one would have to spend the majority of their time in meditation. The next question is...is this really living?

So lets cut to the chase (mythologists and prophecies claim we may be headed into a higher dimension – the 5th dimension):

This is the 3rd dimension. It's real, it's not an illusion. If you're here, there is NO escaping it. You can spend 6 days and 23 hours in meditation if you want to, but when you come out of it, you step into the 3rd Dimension world for One hour and then you immediately realize that wow, this world is very negative and the Tibetans are still getting beaten up over there and the war is still going on over there and some soldiers just got blown up and on and on and on, so, man I want to escape, so I better go back into my meditation to seek refuge from the illusory world. Again, is this living?

I say NO. So we need simply to shift to a new understanding. Ready?

1) This world is the world of duality, the world of polarity, of positive and negative. This is the world of the 3rd dimension.

2) There are countless dimensions above this 3rd dimension.

3) The world of God or Source or Pure Mind or Oneness, is NOT in the 3rd dimension. It isn't BUT we are. This world of God or Source is singularity not duality. it is a singular all positive dimension that gives birth to all lesser dimensions.

4) However, inside of us, is the DIVINE SPIRIT, that is the real us. The Divine Mind encased in a flesh body here to function in this material world - this 3rd dimension - with a purpose.

5) We recognize, realize or understand that our true nature is SINGULARITY, or Oneness. But we live in a world of Duality.

6) If we attach ourselves only to the material, and to the degree that we do so, we also separate ourselves further from the truth (see 5 above). We only perceive the negative and can get caught up in it.

7) Society is set up to lock us into the material 3rd dimension world and Controllers profit from keeping us in this sleep state. (In example, when you're in Kindergarten, do they tell you that you are an infinite being capable of being a co-creator in this dimension because the real you is the Divine encased in a material body and as such this reality is molded by your every thought? NO. They teach you the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic and you are indoctrinated into eventually serving this system.) (This whole system is against the divine plan, thus may fall, as we are starting to see)

8) With this new understanding, you know who you are, where you are from and where you will eventually go to. Right now, you are a walking, talking, living Sage - a physical manifestation or expression of the non-physical Divine Mind. Sure there is alot of Negativity. And out of compassion, you can and do help others. But you also enjoy life. You take a walk by the beach and enjoy the surf pounding. You smell the flowers, you listen to music, you laugh, you cry, you create, you sleep, you eat, make love, communicate, whatever. You simply enjoy life.

9) By your example, you are released from the world of illusion as you know the Truth. You are no longer ignorant and a prisoner of the 3rd dimensional world. You are also no longer a prisoner of Dogma - something man made. Also by your example, you are living in balance with the Divine Universe and as such you are in flow. Good things happen to you. The landscape changes simply because you walked past it. The kid you said hello to is transformed. The cat you gave some milk to learns to trust humans. You are walking your talk and you are aiding in the raising the consciousness of the entire planet and everything in it. Even the pebble evolves because you held it in your hand.

10) This is the best part. This understanding can come in an instant or it could take years. It is under the direction of a higher intelligence beyond your comprehension, it is coming from an infinite place. And the exciting NEWS is that it is now directly coming in through energy, through light, through people, through star emanations, its moving as part of a quickening and now is the time to jump on and ride the wave to immortality and enjoyment. This is the realm of SPIRIT. Spirit, the above overcomes the material, the below. It’s building up but it seems to point to the fast approaching December 21, 2012 date. Let the shift begin!

A true undertsanding of the elements really begins when we experience the practical work later on, but FIRE, then, is the first element, with qualities of heat and dryness. Where there is fire, there is light, and visa versa. Fire is found in light. Fire is expansion and extension, which is another reason why Bardon emphasizes its electrical quality. Fire is commonly thought of as positive and masculine, yet it is pointed out that fire has both a positive and negative aspect of constructive and destructive natures. I think also fire can be said to have electrical as well as magnetic properties, when we think of the allure and hypnotic trance fire can have to the eye, attracting attention, conciousness, and awareness. The flame lit on the altar not only emanates the positive electrical charge of light in extension, but it has the negative and attractive charge of magnetism. Taking it further, can anyone see a feminine quality to fire? (throughout the rest of this analysis, Bardon makes no reference to gender, or masculine/feminine aspects.)
Fire's overall positive and electrical quality is important in relation to the other elements, and as we shall see, begins the development of Bardon's tetrapolar magnet. I'd also like to refer to the 4 worlds of the Kabbalah and the Tetragrammaton as we continue because at this point they have everything to do with this development. Therefore Fire represents IOD, or I , the first letter in the Tetragrammaton, and Atziluth, the first of the four worlds, the world of emanations. I invite anyone to expand on this.

Next we have WATER. Qualities of coldness and shrinkage. LOL.. I'm sorry but that's what Bardon says and it's begging to be joked about. What male has not experienced this??
Okay but seriously, I'm not sure if shrinkage is my first thought on the quality of water. Cold and wet, yes, as far as the element qualities are concerned. Certainly it is magnetic. In this way, could it not also be expansive? As it attracts, it builds. As Fire's feminine opposite, and as Briah in the four worlds of Kabbalah, it is the maternal world of creation, yet it does not create without fire, nor does fire create without water, elementally speaking. They depend on one another and elements that follow depend upon them. Here I elaborate more on the polarity of water. Water is represented by the letter Heh, or H, in the Tetragrammaton. Bardon again speaks of the creative and destructive qualities. I think it's important to mention the life and form giving qualities of water, and life's dependence on water. It is interesting to note also that Bardon begins to use the terminology of 'electrical fluid' and magnetic fluid'. It would seem that both electrical and magnetic aspects within the elements operate like fluids. I believe this indicates the astral nature of the elements, but Bardon does not explain. It may also indicate how as we work with the elements, they have a fluid like quality, when we channel and project them, they flow through us. Thoughts?

Well all I can say is, does it matter? I thought this statement was a bit condescending and ego fluffing, and certainly not pertinent to the lessons. Anyway, if air is not an element, and earth is not an element, and we still don't know if akasha/ether is an element, then are fire and water the only elements proper? I have heard it explained that earth was not really an element, but the admixture of air, fire and water. In any case, we are dealing with the elements and their relationships and their successive combinations. Bardon explains that air has the quality of dryness and moisture, which shows that it is the combination of fire and water. Air is actually produced from this combination. This is in line with the four worlds again, as Atziluth and Briah, the Father and Mother, combine to produce the Son, and the letter Vau, or V of IHVH. It may help now to look more closely at the letters, for the V is a repeat of the IOD or 'I', in the actual form of the Hebrew letter, only it has an elongated tail that extends downwards. This indicates it is a reflection of IOD. Then we see heh, or H is repeated more obviously, the second H also being a reflection of the first H. I say reflection, but not the same. They are symbolically different. This shows a distinction between the first 2 letters and the second 2, yet also a correspondence. It may also help in understanding why Bardon distinguishes between the Fire and Water being elements proper and the Air and Earth being merely their respective admixtures. Let us view the Air as mediator between fire and water, and also neutral. In line again with Kabbalah and the tree of life which shows the three pillars of Fire, Air and Water, Air being the middle pillar, the axis, balancing the 2 poles. In the four worlds it is the world of Form, Yetzirah, and also represents the Astral plane. An important point I think. Oh yes, and the form of the V, that is the IOD with the extended tail represents the sword. the magical instrument of air.
Bardon mentions air has the quality of motion. He also points out it is life sustaining. Ponder that. Air, sustaining life through breath, bringing prana. Bardon misses the opportunity here to mention the word and its role in creation, in magic and in communication.
The word is spoken with the breath and ideas are carried in waves through its medium. Air then also corresponds to intelligence or intellect, and is predominantly positive/masculine/electrical. We can easily see the constructive and destructive properties of air.

Finally we have EARTH. Element proper or not, our understanding of the elements is not complete without it, nor would we have the wealth of analogies and correspondences and the emanations of physical things to help us apprehend the elements at all, such as physical electricity and magnetism.The qualities of earth are dry and logically cold if we are keeping track of comparative qualities between each element. Here is the solidifying power, or magnetism, the culminating tetrapolar magnet, earth. The expression and action of air, water and fire under the limitations of time and space. Now, understanding this tetrapolar magnet is the key to further understanding the elements and how they work together. This is the reason I've kept refering to the Tetragrammaton, because it is also a similar key. It may also help to look ahead to the four directions and their element attributes. In the East, we attribute air, which has the positive or electrical quality, and to the West, we have water with its magnetic polarity. Again to the North we attribute earth, which is as a whole magnetic, (magnetic North) and to the South we have "electrical' fire. Four poles, intersecting, forming cross (a symbolic form of the tetrapolar magnet), at the center of which would be the altar and magician, and what 'element' do you suppose he represents? These four poles interact and combine to produce all material physical things associated with the earth element. Now, that is my best understanding of this tetrapolar magnet that Bardon refers to again and again. Any thoughts?

Israel Regardie was born Francis Israel Regudy November 17, 1907 in London's East Side. His parents were Orthodox Jewish immigrants who lived in an impoverished area of London. As World War I erupted and engulfed Europe, Regardie's older brother enlisted in the British Army, his name was accidentally registered as "Regardie," instead of "Regudy" yet the family adopted the change. In August 1921, while Francis was 13, the Regardie family immigrated to the United States, settling in Washington, D.C. His interest in the metaphysical and in the Mystery Schools stemmed from the literature his sister would bring home. His sister brought home books on astrology, meditation, diet & health into the Regardie household, often ridiculed by his Orthodox Jewish parents. Francis spent his early teenage years reading and studying subjects that illuminated his intelligence, notably psychology and metaphysics; specifically works by the Theosophical Society. The Library of Congress became Regardie's "second home." He fondly recalled books that his sister brought home by Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Chief of the Theosophical Society.

Regardie admitted Blavatsky was his "first love" and led him to approach the Mystery Schools with a renaissance understanding. He enrolled in college and studied Art in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. Eventually he befriended a Rabbi who became his Hebrew tutor, this linguistic skill greatly assisted him in his later Hermetic and Kabbalistic sacred studies. On 18 February, 1926 Francis applied for Membership in the Washington College of the Societas Rosicruciana in America. He received the 0=0 Neophyte initiation on 18 March, 1926 and advanced to the 1=10 Zelator Degree 2 June, 1927. During a meeting one night with a lawyer, 20 year-old Regardie came across a book on Mysticism and Yoga {Liber ABA Part I} by Aleister Crowley. The book and its author, peaked Regardie's interest in Mysticism, leading him to write to Crowley's publisher, a 13 year-old address in the book. His letter, by accident or karma arrived 18 months later in the hands of Aleister Crowley.

At Crowley's invitation, Regardie traveled to France in October 1928, where he was employed as Crowley's secretary for four years. Crowley lectured Francis on yoga and mysticism, and magic. After three years in France, Regardie had to relocate to London with Aleister due to scandals and Crowleys ill reputation. The French government had deported Aleister and his offices. In an effort to repair Crowley's damaged image, Regardie co-authored with P.R. Stephenson, the book called "The Legend of Aleister Crowley ". It was published in 1930, by which time they were gradually drifting apart due to Aleister's megalomania.

In his early 20s, Regardie was already versed in Hermeticism thus at one point in his tutelage under the impressionable Crowley, Regardie received the IX° of the O.T.O. Francis rarely disclosed this to his students, since the degree and obligations in the O.T.O. were irrelevant to him. Francis eventually had a falling out with Crowley, which was not forgiven until his later years. During this falling out, Crowley "revoked" the obligations of the IX° from Regardie. Regardie's forgiving and charitable character showed in his later work The Eye in the Triangle: An Interpretation of Aleister Crowley" {Llewellyn Pub, 1970}, which showed his maturity towards the matter.

Francis was then employed as a secretary for the British author and poet, Thomas Burke from 1932-1934. He published "A Garden of Pomegranates" in 1932 with Aries Press; a collection of his private notes and experiences in working with the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. "Tree of Life" his next work was published by Rider {publishing house of the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot} also in 1932. It was on the basis of these works and their peer reviews that the books reached the Adepti of the Stella Matutina. Francis' association with Crowley proved a burden in any undertakings with Golden Dawn organizations.

A select number of the Stella Matutina Adepti demanded Regardie never mention the Golden Dawn in print again due to his recent association with Crowley. The business of dealing with Crowley's antics in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn his expulsion, and its schism from 1900-1903 left a lingering bad impression. After 1903, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn splintered into different groups most notably the Order of Alpha et Omega administered by Frater S'Rioghail Ma Dhream, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, and the Stella Matutina, operated by Dr. Robert W. Felkin, Frater Finem Respice.

E.J. Langford-Garstin, an Adept of Mathers' Order of Alpha et Omega wrote Francis condemning him and requesting he cease printing references to the Golden Dawn. Others like, Dion Fortune, supported him and lauded his books in her published article in the Occult Review. The Adepti of the Stella Matutina remained neutral, passing no presupposition on Regardie's intelligence and character. One representative of the Order wrote to Soror Fortune, supporting her praise for Regardie's efforts, a second Adept wrote her, stating how negligent her sentiments were. In what Francis later called, "a series of miracles that occurred in a haphazard, accidental way...", the two letters ended up in the wrong envelopes and the fates opened up for Regardie's initiation into the Stella Matutina.

In 1933 Francis initiated into the Hermes Temple of the Stella Matutina in Bristol. He progressed rapidly through the outer Order degrees, initiating into the Theoricus Adeptus Minor in 1934. Concurrently with Francis' studies in the Stella Matutina, the Order was already in a severe state of infighting, decay, and abeyance. Francis saw the curriculum unintelligently altered by corrupt Adepti who had little knowledge of ceremonial magic, much less the lectures. Regardie, in his deep respect & love for the Golden Dawn, believed the only way to ensure survival of the Golden Dawn teachings was to break his initiatic oath of secrecy and publish the Golden Dawn curriculum in hopes it would be renewed by succeeding generations and more vigorous minds.

In 1936, Regardie wrote about breaking his Oath to the Order:
"Without reserve have I deliberately revealed as under a surgeon's scalpel the rotting tissues which have clogged the pulsating heart of the hidden knowledge. May the publication of that inner heart be as the removal of that rot and disintegrating process which has attacked the Order and threatened the vitality of its magical system. Despite the condemnation and criticism I have considered so urgent and necessary, it should be evident to all that I have only the deepest respect and love and veneration for the sacred cause which the Golden Dawn espoused. Its teaching and its ceremonial system thrill me intensely and have evoked deep admiration within me...If I have wronged the Order, its guardians will know how and where and in what way I may be punished. If I am guilty of treachery and have mistakenly worked against the intent and purpose of the true occult forces behind the Golden Dawn, those intelligent powers concerned with the initiation of mankind, then willingly I open myself to the avenging punitive current. On the other hand, there is little doubt but that I may expect every assistance in this my venture of publication should those guardians also feel that the Order has finished its day." {"What You Should Know About the Golden Dawn" © 1983 by The Israel Regardie Foundation Phoenix, AZ}

Francis permanently left Crowley's employment due to a libel case against Nina Hamnett, a renowned sculptress Crowley could no longer afford the payroll. He indulged again in writing more treatises on Hermeticism, entitled "The Art of True Healing," {1934} and "The Philosopher's Stone" {1936} published by Aries Press. Regardie published the outer Order curriculum and advanced Inner Order {Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis, R.R. et A.C.} with two titles; "My Rosicrucian Adventure," {1936} and a four volume series of curriculum entitled "Golden Dawn" {1937} both by Aries Press. "Golden Dawn" was reprinted in a revised and enlarged edition in 1969, leading to his envisioned revival of vigorous interest in the Golden Dawn system by new generations of magicians. Returning to the United States in late 1937 he entered Chiropractic College in New York to study psychophysical therapy. He studied psychophysical therapy under Dr. Nandor Fodor, previously studying psychoanalysis in London under Dr. E. Clegg and Dr. J.L. Bendit. Graduating in 1941, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 after the outbreak of hostilities with Japan.

In his highly pioneer synthesizing of the Golden Dawn teachings with Reich's psychophysical therapy, Regardie created a unique synthesis of mysticism, occultism, and psychotherapy. His psychoanalytic training encompassed Freudian, Jungian and Reichian methodologies. In 1947 he encountered Reich, and became an enthusiastic researcher into Reich's theories of Orgone energy. He published "The Middle Pillar" {Aries Press, 1938}, which provides step-by-step instructions on how to perform the practical exercises of Golden Dawn's ceremonial magic. In "The Middle Pillar" he also compares these magical techniques to the hypotheses of psychoanalysis. He sought to remove the synthetic walls that had been erected between magic and psychotherapy. He explored Christian mysticism and wrote about his ideas in The Romance of Metaphysics published in 1946 {Aries Press}. In 1947, Francis relocated to Los Angeles, California where he set up a private practice as a Chiropractor and Reichian therapist.

While earning a living through his private Chiropractic trade, Francis carefully selected students from his stock of patients that paraded through his office. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Francis taught his synthesis of Golden Dawn magic, mysticism, and psychotherapy to students such as: William Kennedy, Cris Monnastre, Larry Adam Forrest, and Alan Miller Ph.D. writing under the pen name Christopher S. Hyatt. He also wrote a compendium of literature with various publishing houses until Falcon Press was created by Dr. Christopher S. Hyatt and his team in 1980: Twelve Steps to Spiritual Enlightenment{Sangréal Foundation, 1969}, The Art and Meaning of Magic {Helios 1950}, How to Make and Use Talismans {Aquarian Press, 1970}, A Practical Guide to Geomantic Divination {Aquarian 1972}, Foundations of Practical Magic {Aquarian 1979} Llewellyn Publications under its owner Carl Llewellyn Weschke procured the copyrights to select titles of Francis' books in 1969, republishing "The Golden Dawn," which enlivened an occult renaissance. In 1979, Francis began work on the "Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic." This great undertaking was made possible by his friend Carr P. Collins, Jr. who traveled twice to Great Britain to obtain Gerald Yorke collections on Golden Dawn history. Francis writes his reasoning writing a new compendium of Golden Dawn teaching:

"On studying this new set of documents I decided to ensure that the Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic" would be a much more complete version of the Order's teaching that the original hastily-put-together version was. On of the things that has always rattled me is human secrecy. So long as this body of knowledge remains locked up in one or more human beings' brains, it runs the risk of being lost to mankind forever. It needs to be put in book form to be distributed all over the world, so that if some type of cataclysm occurred someone, somewhere would be able to rediscover this material and once more make it available. So long as a few books can be found tucked away somewhere, this knowledge cannot be lost....Then this form of occult knowledge, this particular rendition of "being brought to the Light," would endure for another thousand years." {"An Interview With Israel Regardie " © Falcon Press 1985}

Charles Cicero consecrated Isis-Urania Temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn® in Columbus, Georgia 1977. After much correspondence, Francis traveled with Cris Monnastre in 1982 to Isis-Urania to initiate her and one other individual into the 5=6° Adeptus Minor of the R.R. et A.C. Francis consecrated the Vault of the Adepti at Isis-Urania, establishing the Second Order of the R.R. et A.C. ensuring almost 100 years after the founding of the original Golden Dawn, the Light of initiation continued in America. In 1983 he visited New Zealand, where a Stella Matutina lodge had been founded by R. W. Felkin in 1912 and continued to function. He accepted honorary initiation to the 6=5° Adeptus Major grade by Thoth-Hermes Temple headed by Pat and Chris Zalewski in Wellington, New Zealand. After his death, Francis posthumously received the 7=4° Adeptus Exemptus R.R. et A.C. degree by the Thoth-Hermes Temple in New Zealand.

In 1981, Francis retired from Chiropractics and moved from Los Angeles to Sedona, Arizona where he continue to write. Falcon Press published the "Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic" in 1983. Around 1980-1982 Francis and Dr. Christopher S. Hyatt inaugurated two organizations; the United States Ecclesiastical Society and Seminary, and the Israel Regardie Foundation to ensure his work would continue long after his death. Frater Ad Majorem Adonai Gloriam {Regardie} and Frater Adonai Achad {Dr. Christopher S. Hyatt} oversaw the establishment of a Golden Dawn Research Center in 1984. Frater Adonai Achad also established several Golden Dawn groups in Los Angeles, California; in South America, and in Arizona at the behest of A.M.A.G. Until the end of his days, he continue to devout his work to the Golden Dawn and his students, tirelessly offering advice on therapy, health, and mysticism. Francis died of a heart attack on 10, March 1985 while having supper with friends at one of his favorite restaurants in Sedona, Arizona.

Some Interesting Issues...

Before Dr. Regardie died he asked me to continue his work, particularly in the area of publishing.

Considering the ups and downs of the economy, the bankruptcy of a number of important distributors, and the general change of complexion in the industry as a whole, we give ourselves a letter grade of B. Other than the Complete Golden Dawn, demand for Dr. Regardie's work published by New Falcon has been moderate. There are a number of possible reasons.
Regardie didn't want anyone to centralize the Golden Dawn. Every one of his private students knew of this requirement. I, of course, promised that I would not attempt to control the Golden Dawn and for this I give myself a letter grade of A.

However, I can't say the same for some others, many of whom have tried to monopolize the activities of Golden Dawn as their own fiefdom. As usual they assert that they are doing it for mankind and, as usual, only fools believe such attempts at transforming greed into altruism. In my feeble attempt to counter this coup, I have created-or helped to create-functional (and dysfunctional) operating Temples. Some of these have been a practical success while others have been outright failures-as I intended them to be. However, one thing is clear: they exist and their very existence resists the attempts to "own" the Golden Dawn. For this I give myself a letter grade of B.

Even more disturbing than the attempt to monopolize the Golden Dawn is the misuse of Regardie as a steppingstone and authority.

These upstarts misused Dr. Regardie as a power base and then demeaned him. These were attempts at ad hominem character assassination. These "remarks" range from calling Regardie a fool or lacking in knowledge, to spreading rumors, to fabrications and derision surrounding the circumstances of his death. The maneuver of using a person and then demeaning him is not uncommon for individuals who lack real substance of their own.

Finally, Dr. Regardie is sometimes accused of betraying Crowley by exposing his faults in The Eye in the Triangle. Dr. Regardie's analysis of Crowley is essential to unravel the truth, as both Crowley and his followers have obfuscated an entire body of knowledge in decorative pastels. Regardie is often "hated" because, as one member of Crowley's clan has said, "How dare Regardie psychologize the prophet of the New Aeon! This is why Regardie suffered and why his reputation is questioned-this is why Crowley will be remembered and Regardie forgotten." Assertions such as these often amaze me-as their authors attempt to pass off their need for hero worship as moral imperatives. It is both funny and pathetic what a fool can do with a few footnotes. Wild assertions, academic style and clichés cannot take the place of critical thinking.

The attempt to fling Dr. Regardie to the far reaches of hell-or worse, a footnote or two-not been successful, although at times it has seemed so. Books have been published which slowly removed Regardie as a major force in the Golden Dawn, while some followers of Crowley have attempted to ignore him because Crowley and Regardie had such an awful row.

We know that the return of the Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic, in its second edition, will help bring Dr. Regardie back into the richness of the light which he so deeply deserves.

Standards, Elitism, Equality and Magic...

If you needed a heart transplant you might search for a surgeon with the best rate of success. We can define
success as the highest number of patients who survived the operation, the length of time before symptoms reappeared, and possibly the quality of the patient's life after surgery. Assuming you wanted to survive, these standards-and others-might make up your selection criteria.

On the other hand, if you didn't want to survive, you would use different standards. With this idea in mind, I will conclude that no matter what you do, you have standards-and by this I include those "standards" fostered by politicians, newscasters, grammar-school teachers and derelicts. (However, if you held their "standards" you probably would have not purchased this book.)

I have standards and I assert they are based on what is defined as success, quality of life and a general feeling of well-being. I do not base my decisions or actions on what the mentally defective might do. If I have a dollar set aside for donation I will give it to a hungry genius working on the origins of life, and forego helping the inadequate. If I had two dollars I would give both to the hungry genius.

Dr. Regardie also had standards and they were not those of the "crucified one." He was an elitist and, though he sometimes failed both in judgment and results, he held to his standards nonetheless. He was kind to people, polite and concerned. However, he chose his company as carefully as he could.

Dr. Regardie donated or gave his money (and heart) to promising students in college and magic as well as to a few occult and non-occult organizations. The weak, stupid and lame were not on his donation list. He gave value to what he valued. He was not interested in the applause of bleeding-heart, guilt-ridden weaklings. One of his concerns, as is mine, are the programs designed to weaken the individual through blatant overindulgence and the teaching of self-hate which has been inculcated into the minds of the healthy and capable by a decadent morality. He fought this at every opportunity.

Elitism in this context is to support and admire the best, not the worst. This doesn't mean harming others who do not meet these standards; it simply means withholding value from them.

Dr. Regardie never attempted to reduce the best to the worst for the sake of pity. In this sense neither of us supported the politically correct notion of equality. Our attitude has led to both of us being ostracized by many occult groups-which includes most Crowley organizations. Let me make this point very clear.. . . . . Dr. Regardie was a Thelemite, something of a Jeffersonian Democrat, or a Libertarian.. . . . . However, he realized that Thelema and most political groups behaved in the exact opposite of the values and theories espoused by their founders. Although offered a high-ranking position in a number of organizations-including the OTO-he politely refused. Keep in mind that, though Dr. Regardie was a gentleman publicly, privately he could be quite vicious concerning the weak and lame who headed and populated most Occult groups.

Magic is the attempt to control paranormal or natural forces, by ritual, imagination and other techniques, to conform to the will of the operator. The term "will" in this context refers to the "force of desire." The control of paranormal forces can mean learning from "higher powers" to finding the right mate. Some individuals regard some forms of magic as either black or white. Apparently this means that black magic correlates with self-interest and harming others, while white magic relates to spiritual pursuits and helping others. Magic, however, is magic, regardless of what ends one pursues or how you might moralize about the means used to accomplish the end. Like science, magic must remain amoral-uninfluenced by any set of standards except knowledge and results.. ....

In summary, Regardie espoused the theory that, like science, magic was an objective practice...... the ritual either accomplished its ends or not.. ....

Though Regardie was a generous and caring person, he never regarded his personal values from a moral perspective nor demanded that others behave like himself.

Dr. Regardie had very high standards although, like all of us, he often failed at realizing them.. . He was a strong advocate of elitism and was horrified by what I now call the new age plague.. ... .which has distorted and obfuscated magic and science through a neopuritanical ethic, eulogized through a greatly watered down Judeo/Christian/Islamic morality.. .... The ethic of the new age, which in my view is now dwindling, is a combination of regressive self-indulgence and self-hate.. ... .two programs of self-destruction whose time has come and gone. We are now moving into a new era, neither better nor worse than the one we are emerging from.. .... This is not the so-called Aeon of Horus, but another.. .... The Aeon of Horus has come and gone in an instant and, like all minor influences, has left behind its refuse. With all of this said, we at Falcon hope that you find this new edition both more useful and enjoyable.

I am the publisher and editor at Ouroboros Press, an independant publishing house, which produces classic texts from the Western Esoteric Tradition.

Much of my time is spent on these subjects and in addition to publishing I also give presentations in the same field.

My current lines of study include; alchemical emblemata, Arabic magic [particularly lunar manazil], angel magic, rosicrucianism, grimoires, and magical alphabets in practical and historical contexts. I have background in Hermetic Qabalah, ceremonial magic, Thelema, Theosophy, and esoteric symbol systems.

I am also very interested to read well reseached papers on topics aligned with the focus of this group should any of you have such to share.

Thoughts, book recomendations, techs...anything?

So I have been studying a lot. I'm trying my best to wake up, reach an enlightenment, as to which I no longer have to rely on others. There are many who point at the moon, And in being blind it is hard to tell how on the mark they are. But I "KNOW" it is there. So on with the topic at hand.

I've read William Walker Atkinson's Raja Yoga, as well as The Kybalion. I'm working on the "light on the path" by Mabel Collens
as well as some Very basic stuff on astrology and palmistry, and the Kabbalah. My father is also an occultist, and has been studying since he was 18. He has some articles here:

Also, because of my background, I have developed a viewpoint different than most people. I would be fun to talk debate whatever. Because I find that through argument, I get a better understanding of the basic materials.

Dr. Christopher S. Hyatt 12 July 1943 ~ 09 February 2008

Leilah Publications, its affiliates & associates, friends, family & students, and the O.A.I. celebrate the life of Christopher S. Hyatt, Ph.D. who left this world and embarked on his journey to the "Undiscovered Country" on 9 February 2008.

Dr. Hyatt was Born July 12, 1943, in Chicago, IL to Leonard Miller and Bertha Freidman. At 17 he left High School, and joined the United States Navy. Later he obtained his GED during his military service, and upon separation from the navy, embarked upon his long and impressive academic journey. His academic career began at Los Angeles City College, where he studied accounting. He then obtained a BA degree from Cal State Los Angeles, an MA in Psychology from Cal State Los Angeles, an Advanced M.Ed from The University of Southern California, a Ph.D. in Psychology at Western University as well as another Ph.D. in human behavior from USIU. His specialty was in experimental and clinical psychology, and he practiced as a psychotherapist for many years and operated his own Freudian clinic in Southern California.

Dr. Hyatt was an accomplished, and sea worthy sailor, who once embarked upon a journey to sail around the world. He founded and led the 1st AIDS SAILATHON, which raised money for AIDS research by sailing from Long Beach, CA to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1993. He was best known as an accomplished writer; authoring over 70 books, including the very popular "Undoing Yourself" series, and in recent years had produced a series of instructional DVDs & audio CD lectures. His interest in the occult began in his early twenties. His desire to further pursue his studies in magick resulted in meeting Israel Regardie in the 1970s. Regardie introduced him to Reichian therapy, which he insisted Dr. Hyatt learn prior to any magickal pursuits. Regardie further instructed him in the magickal system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Dr. Hyatt's tireless efforts to conserve the legacy of Dr. Francis Israel Regardie and the Golden Dawn teachings led to the establishment of extended Golden Dawn lineages. He was the chief executive officer of the not-for-profit Israel Regardie Foundation that carried on Dr. Regardie's Golden Dawn tradition. Frater Hyatt's research and writing on the "occult" and "magic" led to the formation of the O.A..I. & its continuance. Dr. Hyatt illuminated numerous souls with his Mercy & Severity.

I was introduced to Dr. Hyatt in 2005 through Soror Inanna of the O.A.I. for an academic presentation with the American Academy of Religion, at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. It was a few years earlier that another Soror had corresponded with leading figures in the Western Mystery Tradition for advice on the O.A.I., among them Kenneth Grant and our dear Dr. Hyatt.

I was also fortunate enough to interview him on Illuminati Coast to Coast, and witness his kindness, wisdom, and generosity firsthand. Years before my meeting with him at Arizona State, I studied his "Undoing Yourself" series and conducted the rigorous exercises prescribed in his books, CDs, and DVDs. After he kindly granted me an interview I corresponded with him on and off privately, continuing his exercises and regimen. His Mercy and Severity were pillars that guided myself and thousands of other "Toxick" souls to "descend, then transcend." It was a honor to have known him and worked with him. Dr. Hyatt's generosity, his kindness, wit, and Zen-like antics will never be forgotten by those who cared for him. We miss him immensely.

I have just started a new tribe specifically for discussions of advances in the sciences of biology, physics, chemistry, neurology, psychology, etc. since the time of Crowleys writings....and how they apply to, challenge, enhance, or change the metaphors and models of Thelema.
we know so much more now that can be applied to "Scientific Illuminism" . This is a place to discuss this evolving world-view completely outside of the context of lineages, groups, orders or related historical disputes.
My ulterior motive for starting this tribe is that i want to update my own limited understanding of these fields of knowledge, and benefit from the brilliant and studied minds that pass through these spheres.

i need some input here.

first let me explain the situation then pose the question at hand.
ok yesterday a friend and i went for a ride on our bikes and it seemed that every direction we headed we got nothing but rained on. now i dont normally like to ride in rainy conditions but i havnt had alot of oppertunity to ride of late and just said screw it im ridein today(yesterday). so we rode for a while and decided to stop at a resturaunt for some drinks. please dont lecture me i know not a bright idea. any how we sat out side on the pation(covered) and there were these ladies sitting opposite from us and it didnt take long and they joined us for some drinks. talk insued and its not hard to see where this is going. any how the four of us ended up at my place where we continued to drink. we went outside for a smoke. lit the candle and talked some more. well this is where it got really interesting for me. as we began to talk more one of the ladies got this really strange look in her eyes and began this really really facinating talk or revalation you might say about my friends brother who is a diagnosed schitzophrenic(spelling is really bad). i was so amazed at the amount of detail this woman spoke about my friends brother. she trully gave some details that only and i mean only someone that had known paul for a long time would know. as she spoke she had a very strange look in her eyes like she was not even with us on my patio. she seemed to me to really be there with paul. and i now think that she might have been actually speaking with paul in some way. i was in total awe of this woman as she continued.
this lasted for about 15 min. i guess then it was as though some one had slapped her because her head snapped to the side just slightly and she was normal. shortly afterward i asked her if she had any experience with the tarot, and yes she had but had not worked with it for some time.
so my question is this. was there some specific reason that we ended up in that bar. i am still trying to figure this out but as i wrote it down this morning in my journal i seemed to recall everything with great detail and for some weird reason a sense of urgency to see this revealed to me as the reason that we encountered this woman. i have not been studying for long maybe a year and half now but this woman had a powerfull energy to her that seemed to draw me to her. i just need some input from others, thanks to any that can halp me.

So I have not studied Hermeticism at all, but I plan on studying as much as possible. I have some smaller questions before I get to the big on about the photo. First, any suggested books that I should read? second is any suggested techs I should learn?

what is the sphere in front of the persons forehead? Because I have felt something there for most of my life. it feels like a dense mass, that seems to block my awareness. I've tried to run Gunas on it, which allowed me to remote view(I was looking around my roof with it.) . I've had a Babalawo(Ifa) try blasting it with a didgeridoo, which is a form of thoughtform removel. All that did what give my body a shock. So it is a part of me. Any Ideas?

obscure Golden Dawn question, Juliet Ashley

Many years ago when I was young and living in San Diego I was introduced to a glamorous old lady, Juliet Ashley, who invited me over to her occult library. It was like being transported to an ancient wizard castle for me. She was a student of Waite, and I found out later that she had a Golden Dawn charter from the 1930's but don't know much more about her, except that she was also an Archdruid( ess?).
Any ideas about how to go about finding more about her? She was mysterious and for some reason I have been thinking about her lately.

Hi,
Taylor mentioned working with elemental hermetics and having less with planetary.
The form of ceremonial magick I was first introduced to was through the hermetic system which was first created by the Golden dawn. I write that they are first, in light of evidence which shows they were the first such group to openly (in a fashion) unite spirituality, philosophy, and magic (the belief in using other dimensional powers to create change in phenomena).

If we look at elementals (Fire , Water, Air , Earth) as being 'labels' for us and the world around us, we can then appropriate further knowledge by our work with the Celestial dimension, by understanding them (the planets) to have elemental attributes.

e.g. If one invokes the spirit of Mars, one may by the Magickal law of Contagion, use Fiery aspects of heat. This would be pleasing to any power which is 'Martian'. And by pleasing you may then receive blessings.

In this framewok Planetary hermetics are the next step in magical evolution for the practioner. By first learning the building blocks of the elements, one then progresses to the Planetary body. And it is a major task to shift and begin to work with the Karma that the Planets represent. In a fashion the planets and elements are like College as compared to High School. In another sense the Faery world of the Elements (samsarra) is integral to the Gods of the Planets (path to Nirvana) Or said in Alchemical terms , the Lead becomes Gold :)

As in most occult study...it is wise to 'give it some time' when one has a difficulty in going to the next plane. Perhaps we can then fly after we leap?

Of course the question of "Planetary Hermetics" was not specifically defined as being a question of ceremonial magic. But I have commented on it from that point of view. I hope it is helpful

I've gotten active again on tribe, after being disillusioned with all the censorship stuff. I like its potential but also realize there are some dead tribes out there. I wonder how tribe weeds out people who have become inactive or left for good. I would like to pose some questions: How could this tribe be of use to you? What are some buring questions about Hermeticism that could be actively discussed? I had a hermetic buddy in Seattle many years ago and we met weekly and read many of the classics and had great discussions. I never would have learned so much if I had been doing it on my own. I'd like to know who of you out there is still interested in this topic and checks in regularly and so please come forward and say, Hi.

I joined this tribe a few months ago and its definately been interesting. I've noticed that alot of the topics are regarding the 'study of' Hermetics. I've found some great resources thru this tribe.

So, my question is, has anyone applied the principles they've studied to transmute a situation in their life for growth, healing, etc..?

I have found that Application is very difficult, and I get my lessons primarily 'lip to ear' thru my Teacher, which for me is the best way for me to learn.

Orphism

I would be interested in discussing Orphism. I believe it is generally taken to be a Hellenistic mystery school involving a worship of Orpheus and a ritual descent to the underworld. It may go back further to ancient Egypt, but I think it did center on communication with the dead. How does this relate to the "Orphic Egg" that wonderful image of the egg with the snake wrapped around it. I did an article on Orphism in art (ala Apollonaire) but couldn't find that he referenced the ancient Orphics much. Wonder if the art of Delaunay and Leger did harken back to the ancient Orphics or if Apollinaire was just using the term as a sort of catchy publicity move.

Mental Transmutation

I recieved and read the Kybalion last week and joined this tribe yesterday. I share my thoughts in hope of insightful conversation and perhaps recommendation of further reading.

This alchemy of the mind is, to me, the crux of Hermeticsm. Detailed means to achieve this transmutation appear in numerous religious works, no doubt inspired by Hermetic thought. The New Testement of the Bible is one of these, though the power of its imagery seems to fall upon deaf ears in our age and many past.

It seems that in short, Mental Transmutation is accepting and applying the Principle of Correspondance that we may master the Principle of Polarity, Neutralizing it, in order to rise above the effects of the Principle of Rhythm on the Physical plane.

In the terms of Metaphysics, by knowing we are mental creators that exist on many planes of existence, we know that our thoughts create the current manifestation of our Selves. With this knowledge, we are aware that higher planes of existence influence and, in effect, create the lower planes. By observing our mind on all planes when we experience Polarity in the physical plane, we can choose to align our minds with the purpose of Polarity, and with the purpose of Rhythm. We can allow these Principles to work in the Physical world without letting their physical effects shake us in the Emotional plane, the Mental plane, or the Spiritual plane.

I have been working to do this very thing intensively for a year now, and am pleased to receive the Kybalion. I appreciate other perspectives on and experiences with Mental Transmutation.

The New Hermeticism

Have you ever wondered what happened to Hermeticism? I have. Why isn't anybody writing books about it anymore?

Sure, There are plenty of books about people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. But where are the new Hermetic Masters? Where are the books written by people who are living and practicing today?

I think they are still out there. I may have met one the other day. Hermetic Philosophy teaches that many things are possible. I few days ago I went to a statewide conference and heard a man give a speech called "The Art of Possibility". His name is Benjamin Zander and he is the conductor of the Boston Symphony.

His speech was grounded in the here and now. There were no references to long dead philosophers. But the principles and ideas beneath his concepts could have come straight from the the most mystic of Occult Masters. The beauty of what he had to say was that his approach was all based in todays world and explained with stories from his life.

He has a book out, also called "The Art of Possibility". I recommend it to anyone who needs to have, or would like to see, an Hermeticism based in the twenty-first century.

'Chasing beauty thru the Trees'

Beauty is as an ellusive idea as any created by man. Though beauty exists, our interpretations are varied from person to person. For the individual beauty and our apprehension of it will change and grow. So it is not so important a matter of what we find beautiful, but rather that we acknowledge it when it is experienced. And stopping to 'smell the roses,' in our lives is paramount.

As we connect with beauty in our lives we refresh and nourish our inner self. The energy we take in by doing this (actually we are that 'energy' but thats for later discussion) is the elixer of life. The Universal medicine. The Philosophers stone. It can heal us, Body, Mind, and Soul. By seeing and connecting with what we experience as beauty around us, we open ourselves to the One. That is the true source of the spiritual now. This then also helps us to continuethe practice of 'following our bliss' (Joe Campbell). Furthering the possibilites of synchronicites and miracles in our lives.

Though beauty is found in many forms from Buildings, man made art, music, and other creations, it may be more functional to connect with beauty in it's more organic forms. This means to observe and connect with beauty as it is found in nature. Trees, Plants, Flowers, Birds and other life forms we find around us. People can often be a source of beauty, but at first I advise that you start with the more simpler forms of nature. This allows you to grow your deeper connections without the need for another person. This will help you now, and in the future with your relationships.

So sit down in a comfortable position near some source of beauty. Allow your vision to look aside the object, not directly at it. Breathe in it's color, it's shape. Then as you breathe out, send your love back into the object of beauty. Continue to do this for a few moments of the now. Allow your point of focus to go where it will. Perhaps you may find something else of beauty to connect with. Allow yourself to follow your own path of beauty thru the trees.

After spending some of your now in doing this, you will find that you create stronger connections and a wealth of light and energy of beauty...all connecting you to the source of the spiritual now. You create a circuit between your self and that which is beautiful.

Later you can extend this practice (and I advise you to do so) by using other forms of beauty. As found in man made art, and other objects. But by forging a connection with primal beauty first, doing so with intent, you open the doors to your own organic center. This center is located at the same position as your physical heart. It is in this place that you will come to experience inner peace.

Hello Makita, refering to a question you had asked earlier about chaos and hermetics and traditional hermeticism, here's some info for you. I'll skirt the historical aspect to keep this short, but hermeticism used to be, and is still called in some circles, hermetism, and there is a tradition although these days I think we have a tendency to think were are always creating new traditions in general. The Golden Chain of Homer is an excellent example but I believe that all you will find online of it are truncated bastardized versions. The Rosicrucians generated a great deal of hermetic literature, but the philosophy goes back further than that if you start looking at the alchemical classics.
The second point, although you could say that hermetics and chaos are related, it's not saying very much. Hermetics is a natural philosophy, chaos is a state or condition of matter, and that is the traditional view. Matter can apply to very many things, including thought... The philosophy of hermetics did a lot to explain and popularise the idea of chaos, but not just chaos, of the whole structure of nature, inner and outer. Chaos is just one phase of matter, and while a neccesary one, it's definately not the end but just the part of a larger circle. The reason chaos can be a desirable condition is because it is the point where the boundaries between the elements are removed and the elements can then be accessed and separated for further purification.
A third point, the practice of hermetics. In the past hermetics was closely associated to lab alchemy, because one of the wonderful things about hermetism was that every point could be proven. Not just by argument or discussion, but by work that an individual could do. This work was on physical matter because it surrounds us, all of it contains everything that there is including spirit, soul, and body, and because work on a tangible substance can give a tangible experience which becomes knowledge, as opposed to just information, which is the best I think anyone can hope for by just reading, thinking, and discussing these ideas. The other point about working with the physical is that as a tangible substance, it can be shown to another, results can be compared, etc...

Immortality

So I just finished watching the dvd flick "Close Your Eyes" (which I give 4.5 stars out of 5) and I couldn't help but start to ponder the various schemes for immortality, that while universal to mysticism and magick, are especially prevalent in historical Hermetic practice. In fact if one looks at it, it was Thoth(Egyptian twin of Hermes) that first defeated death and Hermes himself that allied himself with Hades.

But central to the ethical issue of Hermetic immortality seems to be the rights of ownership of various souls to various bodies. I mean really, what right can a certain soul claim to a certain body if it has not the WILL and ability to hold onto that body?

Even if ownership was determined by the 'alphatic' propriety of situation, is that really an unchallengable claim?

Black Brothers and the Abyss

I posted this in the “Chaos Magick Tribe” in a thread on “Reincarnation”, but it seemed appropriate to cross post it here

Crossing the Abyss is a consummate act of Will, not a sacrifice of "Ego" and "Attachment". Such concepts as "Ego" and "Attachment" are meaningless beyond the Abyss. And the idea that you can come back from the Abyss is equally meaningless once you have crossed.

"Black Brothers" can be more correctly defined as people who choose not to cross or for some reason cannot cross the Abyss, period. This does not make them any less of a Magician or some such, in any sense of the word "less", it simply means they haven't crossed. I should note that despite the linearity of Cabbalistic systems, crossing is not necessarily "the next step".

People who've crossed still have identifiable Ego's and something like a sense of attachment, from what other people who haven't crossed can determine. But this is simply a mind forcing itself to understand things in terms it understands instead of seeing what's really there.

Reincarnation, as an operative act, is not something worth serious contemplation, if you’re still calling it reincarnation, in my opinion.

As a Gemini which is Mercury which is Hermes which is my surname, I feel a deep connection to understanding Hermeticism. Any good leads? I've read the Emerald tablet and the Kybalion. Would love to study more.
My experiential learning has brought me to India, Nepal, Burma. Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Tibet. Vipassana, rebirthing. Psychedelics, religion, entheogens. Dark hour of the soul.

I’ve always felt that religions all say the same thing – each has just sullied the pure message with its own unique cultural bias or desire for turning a buck. In looking at Hermes' Seven Principles of Philosophy, they refer to concepts the Buddha described (principle of vibration); Vedic karma (principle of cause & effect); Taoism yin/yang (principles of gender and polarity); Judeo-Christian Man-in-God’s-image basis (principle of correspondence); quantum physics (principles of vibration and rhythm); Gnostic and esoteric beliefs that God is found through knowledge (principle of mentalism); and all religions’ basic tenet of the Golden Rule.

FB-1, The Elements

Bardon proceeds with an introductory study of the elements, beginning with the tattwas. He does not go into depth on the tattwas, except that they may be valuable in their timing for works with particular elements. The tattwas, like astrological planetary hours, have periods of time beginning with sunrise to sunset, each element with its own assigned time in progression and repeated cycle.
The tattwas system is also valuable to the magician in its symbolism, as it represents further subdivisions of the elements in a continued numerical and elemental fashion. Anyone familiar with tattwas care to comment? I recommend further study.

One of the things I like best about Bardon's analysis of the elements is his emphasis on the polarity and duality each element has.
A positive and negative aspect, not to be confused with good and evil, but pointing to the constructive and destructive aspects.
He continually uses this interpretation interchangably with 'electric and magnetic' fluids, indicating something more akin to an 'astral charge'. As we progress we will see how this becomes his tetrapolar magnet, and his key to understanding the elements and all that is. He begins then with FIRE, although it is explained that ETHER or AKASHA is the source from which all the elements originate, yet he does not say whether akasha is considered an element itself. I would suspect that he would not, judging from his further definitions and views. He does point out that AIR and EARTH are not elements proper, to the initiate. I think this is a moot point and only serves to confuse. I will explain momentarily.

Bardon, Secrecy, and Progress

In Initiation into Hermetics, Bardon says:

Do not permit anyone to look into your sanctuary. The magician will always keep silence with respect to his way, rise and success. This silence grants the highest powers and the more this commandment is obeyed, the more easily accessible these powers will become. (p.34)

So, how does one deal with their successes and/or difficulties? How does one go about getting support from his fellow hermeticists, if you can't describe your progress.

Do the members of this tribe think it's a hard and fast rule, or more a product of Mr. Bardon's time (WWII Germany and Soviet Eastern Bloc)?

FB-1, 1st Tarot Card

CHAPTER 1 : 1st Tarot card analysis.
Bardon begins with the interpretation of the first tarot card. This card is significant to the lessons that follow and help in understanding Bardon's meaning and terminology, yet I have never seen this card appear elsewhere except his book. Notice the magus face resembles Bardon himself. Not only is it his own interpretation, but it may be his own tarot card illustration, again making it significant to his lessons. This is his Magus card, so those of you who follow the Rider Waite based tarot will notice right away that he places it as the first card rather than The Fool card. If memory serves me right, I believe Waite was the first to have placed the fool as the first card. Previous to that, the tarot did start with the magus, and as Bardon explains, this is the first initiation, mastery of the elements. One could also see why Waite chose to begin with the fool, if we think of how we begin as fools embarking on this spiritual journey, into areas unknown to us. Waite also chose the fool because it was more in correspondence with Aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, also corresponding to the first path between Keter and Hokmah on the Tree of Life. Bardon's kabbalistic correspondences are also different from the modern correspondences we get from Golden Dawn and Crowley.

FB-1, Bardon's Hermetics

John, and all who responded, I read your post about starting a group discussion and working through the Franz Bardon's Initiation into Hermetics just the other day. Your invite to do this was nearly a year ago, and I just realized this, nevertheless I have begun working on a chapter 1 review, for those who are interested, to join discussion and explore the ideas. I hope it will be inspiring and draw alot of attention. I can lead this discussion, but my continuation will be based on group participation. I hope others will take lead in discussing some of the topics and ideas Bardon brings up.
I chose to do this because, even though I don't agree with everything Bardon says, and don't follow everything to a T, I feel this book is a great magical program for beginners and experienced practioners. Many of the techniques continue to be useful and helpful. Like you, I had read the book many years ago, worked with it about 2/3rds through, but continued on to other studies and sources. I think a group working and discussion would be motivating and inspiring to anyone who wants to learn.
I hope it's not too late. This is a good book to work with.

FB-1, Ether, Light and Karma

Onward to ETHER. So little understood, so hard to communicate. Also called Spirit, or Akasha. Sometimes referred to as the quintessence. Difficult as it may be, this 'element' or principle can be treated exhaustively, and can probably be referred to with a thousand other names. Bardon calls it the causal sphere, and we are reminded it is where the other elements all originated. It runs through and permeates all that is, and no magic happens without it. It transcends space and time, and it is no wonder Bardon says religions equate it with God, or it is the God in religion. This view may be debatable, though it wouldn't be hard to find Spirit equated with God. I believe it may be the 'holy spirit' or the 'shekinah' and a force of God, the source, yet it is still a medium. It permeates all the elements and is the source of their power. It is the key to understanding the use and directing of the elements. It brings the total number of elements to five, which is represented by the pentagram, and hints at its importance in ceremonial work. So much more can be said.... hint hint.

Bardon then goes on to cover more points he feels are important before beginning the practical work. I will spend much less time on these, as they are general topics, all of which merit deep study and further investigation. they are;
LIGHT; established on fire. Fire then said to produce light, as water is darkness. This hints at the biblical story of creation.
The concept of light as a spiritual force is what is important. We instantly think of its opposite, darkness, without which, light is incomprehensible.

KARMA. Here is another topic that should be familiar to us. The law of cause and effect. We are accustomed to thinking of good and bad karma, but it is important also to see the karma of things and events, karma beyond the self, while also seeing the karma of the forces we apply, and every action we take. This is a wide open field.

I have more to finish chapter 1 before the practical work begins, and that's the juicy stuff, but I think I've posted enough to see if I've generated some interest.

As Xofer pointed out, Franz Bardon has written a must read "Initiation into Hermetics" as the first in a series of three information packed books on Hermetic magick. I've only read the 'Initiation', and that was over a decade ago, although I also own his book "Practice of Magical Evocation". I was wondering who might be interested in a group reading/working of the "Initiation into Hermetics" with a chapter by chapter review posted here on the tribe?

The Legitimacy Problem

Okay, despite my best efforts to keep this tribe small and exclusive to true seekers only, we've broken that magick number. Now that we've regretably reached a number that signifies a "legitmate tribe" what are we to do?

Do we start requiring ritual sacrifices from tribe members to keep the number of people in the tribe at 100 or less?

Or do we start splinter factions to draw people in large numbers aways from the root congregation?

Or do we start actually doing some legitimate organizing and networking?

Magick: Pure Science vs. Engineering

Ok, I got sucked into a discussion (because I can't shut up) over on "Spiritual Body & Celestial Earth", about "phenomenology". and I realized something.

I'm an engineer where this is concerned. I want it to be useful. I don't want to research this just to see what happens. I want to actually expand my soul, touch the divine, improve my physical life.

They started talking about the restrictions of initiation and Tav and Mem and blah blah blah. I don't think it was meant to be as hard as their making it. I think it's a lot, lot more accessible. People just don't access it.

Maybe I'm wrong. Is there any point to this? Can we meaningfully talk about Hermeticism and Magick at all? Is it so difficult that you need a Ph.D. to progress?

I'm reading "Legacy of the Beast" by Gerald Suster, which seems to be a fairly accurate if pro-crowley biography.

One of the lines he says is "Magicians are not dogmatic". Anyone have a reaction to that statement? Have you met dogmatic magicians?

Virtue

I was 45 before I learned what virtue was. Oh, I had heard of it before. I might even have been able to tell you there were four Cardinal ones if I had thought about it, which I never really did. And I had some vague idea that having had virtue while I was alive might be a good thing after I was dead. But that was about it.

I thought that the purpose of Virtue was to get you a place in heaven after you were dead. What I have discovered is that the purpose of Virtue is to teach us something while we are alive. Frankly, at first I thought this was a pretty radical idea and I had a hard time believing it. So I tried it and believe it or not it seemed to work. When I tried to live and act according to a simple description of virtue that I had found, the world just seemed like a better place. People were kinder and more worthy of respect, unhappy events were less devastating, there was more hope.

This experience has made all the difference in the world to my Hermetic practice. It has made the words "As Above, So Below" come alive in my life. When I see the world differently it looks different.

I am curious if anyone else has had this experience.
